Your supplier meets you in arrivals, the deposit is written on the car, and prices are in euros. Collect at Reina Sofía, at Los Rodeos in the north, or at any pickup point in between. Driving here is mostly narrow roads, which is why the small cars suit it.

Every car carries its deposit in the results, and some hold nothing against your card at all. You decide with the number in front of you rather than at a counter at midnight.
02 Free cancellation
Most cars cancel free, which is the whole reason to book early here. Winter stock on this island is thin and the cheap cars go first, and what actually moves the price is worth knowing before you compare two numbers.
03 Local suppliers
The cars come from firms based on Tenerife rather than a global chain. They run their own fleets here, they buy for these roads, and they are on the island rather than at the end of an international line if something goes wrong.
04 One way rentals
Pick the car up in one place and leave it in another. The widest choice by far is between the two airports, where most cars on the island allow it; drop-offs at the resorts and in Santa Cruz are possible with fewer suppliers. Any one way fee is shown with the price before you book.
05 Euro pricing
The Canaries use the euro and so do we. The number you agree to is the number that leaves your account, with no conversion games when you pay.

Your supplier meets you in the arrivals area. There is no counter to queue at and no shuttle to an off-site depot: your voucher names who to look for and the car is a short walk away. Away from the airports, most suppliers deliver to your address instead.
Is insurance included, and what is the excess?
Every car comes insured, and each one shows its excess, the most you would owe if it came back damaged, before you book. Standard cover leaves out the wheels, the underside, the windscreen and the interior, so if the mountain roads are on your list it is worth reducing the excess when you book.
Is the mileage unlimited?
On most cars, yes, and every one says so on its card. If it matters to your week you can filter for it in the search rather than checking one car at a time.
Can I pay with a debit card?
Sometimes, and it depends on the car rather than on us. Most suppliers here want a physical credit card with raised numbers in the main driver's name to hold the deposit against; some accept a debit card on the same terms. Your voucher says which applies before you travel, and it is the single most common reason a collection goes wrong.
Does my phone need to work out there?
It does, and it is the one piece of admin worth getting right. Give a mobile number with the country code in front of it when you book, and keep that phone reachable from the day before pickup until you hand the car back. Nobody is standing behind a counter waiting: a person is coming to meet you, and if a flight moves or a plan changes that number is how they find you. A collection where the supplier could not reach the driver is not one you can complain about afterwards.
What deposit will I pay?
It depends on the car. Many on this island are listed with no deposit, and every car that does take one shows the amount before you book it.
Can I pick the car up in one place and drop it somewhere else?
Yes. Use the drop-off tab in the search and pick where you want to leave it. Between the two airports almost every car on the island allows it; to a resort or to Santa Cruz the choice is narrower. Any fee appears with the price.
Is it worth hiring a car in Tenerife?
If you intend to leave the resort, yes, and the drive times are the argument. From the southern strip the west coast cliffs are half an hour, Masca is half an hour, and the crater is under an hour. None of that runs to a bus timetable, and the excursion coaches go when it suits them rather than when the light is good. If your week is beach, pool and the front, you do not need one.
Is a car cheaper than taxis and excursions?
For two or three days out, usually, and the gap widens with the size of the party: a coach excursion is priced per person while a car is priced per car. The honest exception is a week that stays on the strip, where a car sits in a hotel car park costing you the hire and the parking both.
Manual or automatic?
Both are available. On the motorway it makes no difference. On the climbs to Teide and Masca an automatic is easier, for a few euros a day more.
